Seven Lies That Will Keep You From Starting Your Business

Seven Lies That Will Keep You From Starting Your Business

 - by Travis Robertson

There are a lot of people who talk about “one day” owning their own business. Yet, very few people actually end up even trying it. Why?

Usually it’s because they’ve chosen to believe one or more lies about starting a business. There are 7 common lies that people are telling themselves right now that will keep them from changing their dream of entrepreneurship into a set of goals they can accomplish.

Lie #1 – It’s Too Risky In Today’s Economy

Without a doubt, our current economic situation sucks. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start a business. In fact, starting a business during an economic downturn may be one of the best things you can do.

Why?

    * Your job is likely not as safe as you think it is. After all, layoffs increase during times of economic uncertainty. Right? Why not put yourself in the driver’s seat rather than depend on someone else for a paycheck?

    * It will force you to prioritize your spending. If you can operate a profitable business in an economic downturn, you can do it during times of economic boom.

    * Competition decreases during crappy economic times. It’s sad but true. A lot of companies go out of business in a downturn. Regardless of the reason, this creates opportunity for someone who is talented and willing to work hard to take on clients from failing companies.

    * It’s cheaper to start a business during a downturn. With so many businesses going under right now, it’s a great time to pick up needed items at an auction or on Craigslist. You can also negotiate better deals with potential vendors right now.

Here’s a fun fact: roughly half of the Dow Jones 30 were started during a recession. Now may be a great time to start that business you’ve been talking about.

Lie #2 – I Don’t Have Enough Time

How was last night’s episode of Gossip Girl? How insane was that Yankees game? OMG…did you see the preview for the next episode of Glee?

    * The average American watches nearly 4 hours of TV per day.
    * 49% of Americans say they watch too much TV.
    * 98% of households in the US have at least 1 TV.
    * 34% have 2.

You have the time. You just have to claim it from the other distractions in your life. If TV isn’t the problem, you may be working too many hours for someone else doing something you hate. This was my problem for too many years. I made a lot of money doing work I didn’t enjoy so that I could buy stuff I didn’t need.

Lie #3 – I Can’t Afford To Quit My Job

Who said you have to quit your job to start a business? Most businesses are started during nights and weekends. Feel like you don’t have enough time on nights and weekends? See Lie #2 above.

Oftentimes, it’s not an income problem that people have – it’s a spending problem. Their cost of living has risen to – or more likely above- their income.

So how can you prepare for being able to quit your job? Here are some things you can do to get ready:

    * Save up 6 months of living expenses in a money market account.

    * Create a budget for both the business and your household. Figure out how much money your business will need to make in order for you to survive.

    * Get out of debt and stay out of debt. It’s a lot easier to start a business if you don’t have to worry about creditors knocking down your door.

    * Practice living on less before you have to start living on less. It’s a habit you have to learn. There is not magic “live within my means” pill.

Lie #4 – It Takes Too Much Money To Start a Business

There are a lot of businesses that can be started on less than $1,000, $5,000 or even $10,000 dollars. You just have to start thinking differently about how you’re going to do it.

First, start small and then scale up. You don’t need to go lease a storefront just because you want to own “the best hotdog joint in town.” Instead, start by renting a cart and setting up shop on a busy street in the financial district downtown. Try out different recipes while minimizing exposure. Figure out if people even like your hotdogs.

Then, if things are going well, begin planning for expansion into a bigger market. Figure out how much money it will take to purchase your own cart. Start saving to buy one without financing it. Once you own your own cart, begin socking money away to buy another cart (in cash) and hire an employee to run it. Keep up this process until you own enough carts that you’re making enough money to open your storefront without going into debt.

Too many people use borrowed money such as credit cards, home equity, and personal loans to finance the opening and/or growth of their business. This is stupid. Figure out how to start smaller with less exposure and risk. It will keep you making smarter decisions because you won’t be able to buy things you can’t afford.

Lie #5 – I Don’t Know Anything About Running a Business

Neither do a lot of people when they start a business and it shouldn’t stop you from starting one.

Don’t get me wrong – you need to learn about running a business. But there are a lot of free or low-cost resources available to you:

    * Ask friends and family who have started a business to act as advisors and mentors.

    * Contact SCORE. They offer free small business advice and mentoring in-person and online.

    * Visit your local library and become and avid reader of business books.

    * Find and read blogs on business development, sales, marketing, freelancing, etc.

If you’re starting small and part-time as I suggest, you’ll have time to learn about running a business as you do it. It will take a lot of the pressure off of having to know it all up-front.

Lie #6 – I’ll Go Out on My Own When …

…my kids are out of the house.
…I retire.
…I blah, blah, blah.

No. You most likely won’t. Excuses like these are generally made out of fear. Starting a business can be a frightening thought. So rather than admit the fear and confront it, people mask it behind “sensible” statements such as these. They tell themselves that it would be unwise to do it right now.

These statements meet two needs:

    * We don’t want to admit we’re scared, so we tell ourselves and others that we’re going to do it…just…down the road. It keeps the dream alive – even if only on life support.

    * It makes us sound reasonable in our fear. After all, who doesn’t want to sound reasonable? Nobody wants to be seen as rash or foolish. This type of excuse enables us to lie to ourselves and others while maintaining a bit of self-respect.

Lie #7 – I Don’t Know What Kind of Business to Start

I think that most people have an idea of what kind of business they would start, they just don’t want to admit it in any other capacity than as a fantasy.

What do I mean by that?

Have you ever played the game with friends where you answer the question “What would you do if money weren’t an object?” Of course. We’ve all done it. And it’s fun because it’s “safe.” It’s all fantasy because, of course, money is an object. So we talk about our fantasy of starting our own sports memorabilia store, wedding photography business, bakery, PR agency, non-profit, etc.

The problem is that when we relegate our passions to the world of fantasy, we no longer see them as potentially viable businesses. We assume that something we’re passionate about can’t possibly make money. It just seems too good to be true that we could actually do something we love and provide for our families.

If you know how to answer that question in a cocktail party setting, then you know what kind of business to start. Now, granted, the business may take on a different form than in your money-is-no-object fantasy. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take the above steps to make it happen.

USANA Compensation Plan Quiz

To help Associates get a better feel for exactly how their USANA organization can grow in various different scenarios, we have put together the following “Compensation Plan Quiz”.

Following are six different scenarios, A., B., C., D., E. and F., each with slightly different assumptions on the sponsoring activity level of the Associate and their team members, but the answers differ significantly.

These are not “trick questions”. They are straightforward examples, and each one can be easily solved with a pencil, paper and grade-school arithmetic.

Good luck!

Pete and Dora Zdanis

Scenario A: You personally sponsor 2 new Associates in January, and no more after that. Each new Associate in your team personally sponsors 1 New Associate the month after they sign up, and no more after that. How many Associates (excluding you) will be in your organization on December 31?

Scenario B: You personally sponsor 2 new Associates in January, and no more after that. Each new Associate in your team personally sponsors 2 New Associates the month after they sign up, and no more after that. How many Associates (excluding you) will be in your organization on December 31?

Scenario C: You personally sponsor 1 new Associate per month, beginning in January. Each new Associate in your team personally sponsors 1 New Associate per month, beginning the month after they sign up. How many Associates (excluding you) will be in your organization on December 31?

Scenario D: You personally sponsor 2 new Associates per month, beginning in January. Each new Associate in your team personally sponsors 1 New Associate per month, beginning the month after they sign up. How many Associates (excluding you) will be in your organization on December 31?

Scenario E: You personally sponsor 2 new Associates per month, beginning in January. Each new Associate in your team personally sponsors 2 New Associate per month, beginning the month after they sign up. How many Associates (excluding you) will be in your organization on December 31?

Scenario F: You personally sponsor 4 new Associates in January, and 2 new Associates per month each and every month after that (February through December). Each new Associate in your team personally sponsors 1 New Associate per month, beginning the month after they sign up. How many Associates (excluding you) will be in your organization on December 31?

Abundance or Scarcity?

Abundance or Scarcity?
by Pete Zdanis

Do you ever wonder why some people always seem to be struggling in building their USANA business (if they haven’t given up already) while others, seemingly effortlessly, continue to successfully build and grow their businesses?

What’s different for these people? What do they have that others don’t have? It can’t be the USANA products, the compensation plan, or the business building tools. Those are available to everyone. Do they have more time than we do? Nope. We all have the same 168 hours available to us every week.

What is it that allows these people to have what others want, but can’t seem to get?

Let me suggest that the more successful people in USANA (and life in general), realize the success they have because they view their business, and life, from a perspective of abundance, while those who can’t seem to move forward in business, or life, tend to have a mindset of scarcity.

Let me be clear that am not professing to be an expert on this subject. Many people with much more education and expertise than me have written thousands of books on this subject.

However, I have done some reading and attended some seminars on the subject of personal development, and the topic of Abundance vs Scarcity always seems to jump out at me as one very powerful concept that anyone can realistically use to dramatically change their life. I have also done a lot of observing over the years, and I have seen what I believe to be clear and distinct differences in the behaviors and perceptions of those who are more successful in USANA compared to those who aren’t.

By now you are probably wondering exactly how to identify or define Abundance vs Scarcity and what you can do to have more abundance in your business and your life.

Unfortunately, I can’t tell you exactly what you, personally, need to do, nor am I qualified to do so. I will, however, share with you two lists which I have compiled of activities and perceptions which I believe exemplify Abundance and Scarcity, particularly as they relate to USANA business building.

I think it is highly unlikely that any one person would have all the characteristics or demonstrate all the behaviors of either category. And, some people will drift back and forth between Abundance and Scarcity from time to time. However, I strongly believe that “successful” people will align more closely with the “Abundance” list, while those who have yet to realize the success they would like to have are defined more so by the “Scarcity” list items.

I hope you will find this information to be helpful in identifying how you, and every person important to you, can move toward Abundance in all areas of your life.

Abundance:

. You approach every day as a new opportunity to share information about USANA with people you can help
. You realize that not everyone you talk with will be interested in USANA, so you thank those people for their time, ask for referrals, and move on
. You are always motivated and excited by knowing that talking with just one person today could change the lives of thousands of other people for years to come
. You realize that you only need to sponsor 2 or 3 Associates per month to build an extremely successful USANA business and that there are tens of thousands of prospects for you to choose from
. You view every unsuccessful prospect contact as a learning experience, and focus on how you can do better the next time
. Your business building intent is always on how USANA, and you, can help your prospect solve a problem or fill a need
. If something doesn’t work for you, you experiment creatively and try new things that will
. You are always staying up-to-date on the newest USANA business building tools, and give them out willingly, yet carefully, because you know that they are an investment in your business, and your future
. You lead by example and are a role model for others to emulate
. You readily provide support and coaching to receptive, teachable USANA team members, viewing each opportunity to do so as a “win-win” situation
. You view other USANA Associates as team members rather than competitors
. You are always looking for ways to improve yourself as a way to grow your life, grow your business and to better serve others
. You encourage and value the success of USANA crossline Associates, knowing that their efforts are making USANA a stronger company and a more secure business for your team members and you.
. You readily tell prospects that they should work with the first person who contacted them about USANA, whenever possible
. You love people and use money
. You know that the only person who can be responsible and accountable for your success is you.

Scarcity:

. You are constantly stressing out about finding your next prospect
. You approach every prospect as though it is a “do or die” situation
. Your business building focus is always on how the next enrollment can benefit you and your business
. If you find a good lead source or business technique you keep it to yourself rather than tell others about it
. You prospect Preferred Customers who were sponsored by other Associates to become Associates in your organization
. You try to sponsor prospects when you know that they have already talked to another USANA Associate
. You are jealous or critical of upline, downline or crossline USANA Associates who have been more successful than you
. You have entered yourself as the sponsor of a new Associate who was actually prospected by one of your team members
. You are always telling your USANA team members what to do instead of showing or demonstrating by example
. You view other USANA Associates as competitors rather than team members
. You are judgmental of those who have chosen to quit building their USANA business
. If a new idea or concept doesn’t work right away, you give up on it immediately
. You are hesitant to start a conversation with a potential prospect, because you can’t imagine why they would be interested in anything you have to say
. You pose as a prospect and respond to ads or USANA web hosting sites of other USANA Associates
. You love money and use people for your own personal benefit
. You are reluctant to buy or give out USANA business building tools because they are “too expensive”
. You easily become disappointed or distracted by rejection, and frequently stop or slow down your business building whenever you experience it
. You secretly sabotage the efforts of others for your own personal satisfaction or gain
. You are critical of other network marketing companies and their Associates
. You blame other people or things (upline, downline, USANA, competition, etc.) for your lack of progress in your USANA business

Three-Time Boxing Champion Jose Rivera to Resume Boxing Career

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

By Bud Barth TELEGRAM GAZETTE STAFF

WORCESTER —  Saying he doesn't know “how far it'll go,” retired three-time world champion José Antonio Rivera of Worcester says he plans to resurrect his boxing career in March, less than two weeks shy of his 38th birthday.

Rivera, who hasn't fought in 2-1/2 years, first announced his intentions in a story posted last week on RingsideReport.com, a website for which he has written. He confirmed his comeback plans to the T&G on Monday night, saying he's “leaning in that direction.”

“There are some personal things I want to make sure are taken care of first,” Rivera said, confirming that he already has the support of his wife and three children. “I'm putting the old team back together little by little with some changes.”

Plans are for Rivera to fight on March 26 at the Palladium on Main Street, though he admitted it's “not concrete.” His birthday is 12 days later, on April 7.

Why would Rivera, who has a full-time job as a Worcester court officer and a nice part-time associate's gig with the nutritional firm USANA Health Sciences, return to boxing now? Well, he said, it's not for the money or the fame.

“It's definitely not a money thing,” he said, also denying that he got the bug because of his involvement with Mark Wahlberg's just-released movie, “The Fighter,” in which Rivera and his son, A.J., make fleeting appearances.

“I want to have some fun with it and see what I can do at 37,” Rivera added. “My body feels good. … I don't know how far it'll go — we'll see what happens. Right now I'm doing it just because I can.”

After a 16-year pro career spent as a welterweight (147 pounds) and a junior middleweight (154) — winning the WBA title in each weight class, plus the IBO welterweight title — the 5-foot-8 Rivera said he'll make his comeback as a middleweight (160), and plans to work his way back down to junior middleweight.

Rivera said he currently weighs 189. He is in his third week of training at the Camp Get Right gym on Milbrook Street, where he has been a pretty regular workout patron since his retirement. He hasn't picked a trainer yet, although he has spoken about the job with Dan Odamtten, who formerly trained welterweight champion Ike Quartey and now lives in Worcester.

“I'm not making a big deal out of this,” Rivera said. “It's something I'm doing for me, and me only — not because I have to, but because I can.”

Rivera first retired in October 2007 after losing his WBA junior middleweight title to Daniel Santos at Madison Square Garden in New York. He made a brief one-bout comeback 10 months later with an eight-round decision over journeyman Clarence Taylor at the National Guard armory on Lincoln Street.

During that career, in which he posted a record of 39-6-1 with 24 knockouts, Rivera never suffered a serious injury. And he's not worried about that now.

“No, you can't be worried about that if you're boxing,” he said. “If it crosses your mind, don't even bother to go out there.”

Income Opportunity Potential
$93,000 is the average yearly income for an established, full-time USANA Associate. $24,500 is the annual average of those who earned as little as one commission check each month. Total includes all earnings from the Compensation Plan, Leadership Bonus, Matching Bonus, contests, and incentives. Calculations based on earnings for fiscal year 2009. Figures should not be considered as guarantees or projections of actual earnings, which result only from consistent, successful sales efforts. To be considered in a rank’s earnings, Associates must have earned checks at a median rank for at least 20 weeks. According to results from an in-house survey taken between 2004 and 2006, the primary reason 17% of USANA independent business owners join the company is to improve their financial future. 21% of that group earns a check at least once a month. Of those whose primary reason is to earn enough to replace a full-time income, 90% have been Associates for at least one year and 57% are full-time Gold Directors and above. The number of Gold Directors and above who have maxed at least 1 Business Center during the year equals less than 1% of all Associates. Those earning as little as one check a month equal approximately 3% of all Associates. If you include all 165,710 with the title of Associate, which includes Associates not actively building a business (acting as wholesale buyers), Associates who just joined, (as little as one day), and those who are just beginning to build their customer base, the average yearly income is still $616.71 with nearly one in three earning a check. To date, USANA has more than 140 Associates who are lifetime Million Dollar Club members.

Achievements
USANA has been rated the #1 company in network marketing for ten straight years, and has received numerous awards and recognition for its
scientific and business achievements over the years.

Employees
In addition to 199,000 Independent Associates in fourteen countries, USANA employs over 900 people worldwide, including approximately 600 people at the corporate offices in Salt Lake City, UT.
